We spoke exclusively with Tony to find out how he and his devices are truly reforming red light therapy for all across the USA…
1. Describe to us exactly what Lux Therapy is and what red light therapy in general is all about?
Lux Therapy is a lifestyle brand focused on health and wellness. Our first product, Lux Personal, helps people easily integrate the healing benefits of Red Light Therapy into their lives.
Red Light Therapy is the consumer term for the scientific discipline known as Photobiomodulation. Two specific bands of light, Red Light and Near-Infrared light have a variety of positive biological responses on the body. Our device uses just these beneficial wavelengths, avoiding the negative aspects of light that are typically associated with sunlight.
Red Light Therapy (RLT) harnesses the power of the sun to optimize our cells and it has many uses and benefits. For example, my mom uses her RLT device after she’s spent time working in her garden. The anti-inflammatory effects of RLT ease the discomfort of her arthritis. My father added RLT to his routine after a knee replacement surgery to speed tissue repair. I’ll admit, I want to look my best, and RLT evens out my complexion and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Just like plants utilize the power of the sun through the complicated process of photosynthesis to convert sunlight into energy, human cells react to light as well. Our cells accept specific wavelengths of light that then trigger a molecular response. One key response happens in the mitochondria. I’m oversimplifying this, but by stimulating the mitochondria we can increase cellular energy. By optimizing the cell’s energy production, we optimize what those cells are meant to do – like produce collagen which improves the complexion or increase the production of fibroblasts to improve wound healing or increase the production of melatonin to help with sleep. These are only a few examples of the benefits of RLT but there are much more available. I head to the educational section of our website for more plus a repository of research (4000+ trials) for consumers to access.
2. What makes Lux Therapy different from others on the market today in your space?
Lux Therapy is a design-forward product that doesn’t compromise on function.
We’ve scrutinized the industry and technology and developed a unique approach to how RLT can be integrated into a person’s life. Most companies in the market create a panel product that requires permanent brackets or stands demanding the user to ‘go to the light’. We think that the light should incorporate into our user’s life – not the other way around. The easier we can make it for the user to integrate the product into their life, the more likely the device will be used regularly, building a healthy habit and a routine with RLT that allows them to take advantage of the amazing technology. In order to accomplish this, we’ve made our device easy to move and manipulate. We integrated a kickstand and a unique positioning base that allows the device to be positioned horizontally, vertically, or at any angle along a 160-degree arc. Our device uses four unique wavelengths to provide an array of treatments, and it’s designed with an intuitive LED touch panel that allows for tactile, visual, and audio feedback. These features come together in the most attractive package we could design, combining vintage flair with modern technology, to give consumers the most aesthetically pleasing device in the market. This is a piece our user can showcase, versus hideaway after each use. We think it’s beautiful and we’re sure you’ll agree.
Lux Personal can also help anyone with their fitness goals. From world-class athletes to weekend warriors to someone preparing for their first 5k with the local running group, this technology interacts with a person’s cells in such a way that it optimizes their potential, increasing output through a variety of cellular improvements. RLT is amazing and can be used by anyone.
3. How has your product reformed the industry?
I own many of the devices on the market, and although they’re great products, they aren’t designed in a way that consumers would be proud to display them in their homes. Lux Therapy is the first device on the market designed around the consumer, not the other way around. We’ve always strived to design a product that could be seamlessly integrated into the consumers lives.
Our device uses four unique wavelengths to provide an array of treatments, and it’s designed with an intuitive LED touch panel that allows for tactile, visual, and audio feedback. These features, combined with an integrated kickstand, and detachable positioning base allow for nearly unlimited situations. These features come together in the most attractive package we could design, combining retro flair with modern technology, to give consumers the most flexible aesthetically pleasing device in the market.
We think it’s beautiful and we’re sure you’ll agree. We think consumers will be proud to display their devices in their homes, not put them back in the closet after each and every use.
4. Is it true that red light therapy can help build up a stronger immune system? What other benefits does it have health wise?
First and foremost, we’re excited that health and wellness are becoming a larger portion of the overall conversation as they relate to the Pandemic. We truly believe that the best defense is a good offense, and that starts with general health and wellness. Lux Therapy contributes to better health.
In general, we feel that wellness is the key to longevity, and that RLT can help improve one’s foundational health. However, the research needed to understand how RLT might combat COVID-19 specifically isn’t yet available. We believe in transparency and providing scientific studies to back our recommendations.
It has been shown that RLT has the ability to regulate complex systems, thereby optimizing immunity at a cellular level. In an exciting study, it was found that the use of RLT has the potential for reversing thymic involution – which is basically the degradation of our thymus gland. The Thymus Gland is crucial for a healthy immune system, and can improve immune function in aged people and even extend lifespan. An optimized Thyroid is crucial as it relates to an optimized immune system. Increasing evidence suggests that thyroid hormones are a major modulators of immunity response across the complex system of monocytes, macrophages, leukocytes, natural killer cells, and lymphocytes, and correlate to immune functions such as chemotaxis, phagocytosis, generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and cytokine synthesis. It’s the dysfunctional thyroid that ends up creating an overactive or underactive immune system.
In addition, one recent study shows how “Platelets play a much bigger role in our immune system than previously thought, according to researchers. In addition to their role in coagulation and healing, platelets also act as the immune system’s first responders when a virus, bacterium, or allergen enters the bloodstream. This discovery opens the door to new ways to treat patients with septic shock caused by viral or bacterial infection and people with auto-immune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.”. So, by improving the body’s platelet regeneration, RLT effectively can provide the body a more robust defense system.
The beauty of RLT is that it helps improve your cells at the most basic level. A strong wellness foundation will inevitably lead to a stronger immune system. The studies related to RLT show that it bolsters the immune system and provides a charge to the complex systems within the body that help to support optimal immune function. Even though there isn’t specific research associated with COVID-19 and RLT, our company’s ethos is to improve overall wellness, which in combination with a healthy lifestyle, is the best offense.
It’s complex stuff, that’s for sure. But in witnessing my aging mother and father incorporating the light into their routines, and seeing them improve their general wellness has given me a new found passion for others to improve upon their daily immunity.
Regarding other mechanisms, RLT has been used for centuries to cure a variety of skin ailments, and improve overall health and wellness. In recent years, the science has continued to expand, and continues to showcase positive benefits. At a high level, our species has moved indoors in recent decades, which has a cascading effect on our natural systems, leading to a variety of ailments, including Vitamin D deficiencies and Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). We are medically starting to tie all these factors together, and seeing how one area affects another, is especially exciting for RLT because of the vast array of molecular changes it’s responsible for..
Because of the non-invasive nature of the modality, light therapy can be utilized in a variety of ways. Until recently, it wasn’t known at a molecular level what was actually happening to our biology, which is one of the primary reasons many haven’t embraced RLT with the energy it deserves. However, with recent advancements in science, we now have the ability to understand the mechanisms of what is actually happening. In recent years, the photoreceptor that accepts light was discovered in the mitochondria. This absorption of light then triggers an increase in oxygen utilization, resulting in increased Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP), which is cellular energy. It can be complicated, but to simplify things, RLT stimulates and maximizes processes in the cells, and helps increase cellular energy.
On the more technical side of things, there are literally dozens of mechanisms taking place due to RLT. For example, fibroblasts increase which speeds healing, which combined with improved protein synthesis resulting in higher collagen production (less wrinkles and improved skin elasticity) and faster recovery times. This improvement in healing is a major reason many athletes have been utilizing RLT to boost performance, and speed recovery.
Biological changes like this cascade into a variety of cellular responses like inflammation reduction, cell proliferation (wound healing), and protein synthesis (collagen improvements), which then affect our muscles, brain, nerves, bones etc, etc, etc. Like the domino effect, you literally start the process and utilize RLT in a consistent manner, and it flows into systemic improvements that you’ll notice throughout your body.
What I think is amazing is that we still don’t know everything that is possible with RLT. There are many ongoing studies looking into new treatments associated with RLT. Some of the most recent studies are researching the use of light therapy for traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer’s, anxiety, and depression. As positive results continue to be discovered, I’m confident we will see these types of devices used to solve even more ailments in the future.
We’ve provided a link to a repository of research to help consumers educate themselves. The research can be sorted by a specific ailment to assist users in their search. Visit Luxtherapy.com/blog for details.
5. What advice would you give to people who purchase your product and want to see the results it can bring?
First off, we’re extremely proud to be in this space, and are proud to be able to offer an at home device that can improve health and wellness. If anything positive comes out of this recent crazy year that we’ve all gone through, we really hope we all start realizing the importance oft health and wellness, and how it’s a key factor that gets overlooked in this day and age.
For those that have bought the product, we recommend you start slow and let your body become accustomed to the power of Red Light Therapy. When someone starts out with RLT, we recommend 6-7 minute treatments approximately 6-12 inches away, 3-4 times a week. As you become more accustomed to the treatments, the customer can quickly increase their dosage times up to 20 minutes depending on the treatment and distance. As I’ve been doing RLT therapy for 3 years now, I do it every day for 15-20 minutes. There are minimal to no side effects, but more isn’t necessarily better when it comes to RLT. We recommend that you start slow and work up to longer treatment times based on the area that you are trying to treat.
6. What is the cost of your product?
We offer our product at $649, which considering the expensive costs of a single spa treatment (~$100 / sessions) is a great investment for improving your health and wellness at home.
We do offer promotions and recommend that consumers follow our newsletter for updates and opportunities to get promotional products when they become available.
7. Where do you see the future of red light therapy heading? What trends do you predict?
RLT is gaining in popularity as the public slowly accepts and understands this type of wellness modality. Saunas, spas, tanning centers, yoga studios, and fitness clubs are all starting to offer red light treatments in some form. RLT will continue its upward trajectory for many years to come and it will be many years before there’s a plateau in this industry.
We’re most excited to see RLT technology continue to evolve. It’s an amazing time that we live in, and hedging our bets that there will be continuous improvement with how RLT is administered is something Lux Therapy is poised for. We expect that like other industries, convenience will drive the majority of consumer’s needs, and things like wearables and portable products will become more relevant.
