The Doctor Who Risked It All To Help Make America Healthy Again

Dr. Mark Chavez had been practicing medicine for 9 years when he decided that he could no longer practice medicine in good faith. Why? Because he came to the realization that the “practice” of medicine had very little to do with people’s health and well-being and much more to do with profiting from people’s misfortune and vulnerabilities. So, what did he do? He stopped practicing medicine and decided that he had to do something that would actually help people get and stay healthy while avoiding having to rely on a broken health care system that benefits from Illness and does very little to help people live healthy. 

His first step after taking a hiatus from medicine was to regain his health. Growing up with a father who instilled the importance of health and fitness into his life he understood that the most important investment one could make is in their health. It was time to get his physical, mental, and spiritual health in check. On his health journey he discovered that most of the exercise methods available were not appealing to him and were not practical.  He realized that they didn’t translate to real world applications of human movement and body mechanics. Furthermore, after interviewing hundreds of patients over the years and asking questions about health and exercise he realized most people don’t understand the importance of doing resistance exercise.  They also shared his feeling of not enjoying most of the available ways of doing resistance exercise. He also learned that many of his patients were unable to use weight to exercise due to problems with grip strength for various reasons such as arthritis, nerve damage, overuse injuries, and strokes.

Around this same time his father lost the ability to grip in both hands after undergoing surgery.  This was devastating for his father as he was a bodybuilder and lifted weights his whole life. To address this need for a new and different way to do resistance exercise Dr. Chavez developed a new exercise device that did not require the user to grip the weight but instead the device attaches to the user so the user can lift weight without having to grip the weight. He called his new exercise invention the Gravity Ball and along with his new invention he created a new way to exercise he called the Gravity Ball Method of Grip-Free Resistance Exercise.

His method of exercise not only has been embraced by people with grip strength limitations but also by athletes, fitness professionals, athletic trainers, strength and conditioning coaches, physical therapists and sports medicine practitioners and many others groups are realizing the benefits of this new form of weight training. Dr Chavez and his team are now working to scale up business operations to make the Gravity Ball Method available to larger numbers of people so everyone can have the ability to do resistance exercise at home or on the go without needing multiple pieces of equipment.   

Dr Chavez has plans to use the funds generated from his business to create a new health care system that will replace the dysfunctional and inefficient current medical system.
