Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford who earns £10.4m a year writes to the members of the UK Parliament to help provide free meals for vulnerable children.

During the coronavirus outbreak, a food voucher scheme was set up to guarantee meals to children who are dependent on food provided at schools by the UK government.

In the letter, Marcus Rashford shows concern about the scheme being due to end because two hundred thousand children had to skip meals due to insufficient foodMarcus Rashford - Child hunger

The 22-year-old, who grew up in a low-income family in Wythenshawe, Manchester, wrote in the letter; “My mum worked full-time, earning minimum wage to make sure we always had a good evening meal on the table. But it was not enough.’’

“As a family, we relied on breakfast clubs, free school meals, and the kind actions of neighbors and coaches. Food banks and soup kitchens were not alien to us; I recall very clearly our visits to Northern Moor to collect our Christmas dinners every year.”

After making his United debut at the age of 18, Rashford has gone on to score sixty-four goals in two hundred and one appearances for the club. He has also 38 England caps.

Rashford has helped raise over twenty million Euros in donations reaching over 1,280,000 children.

He encourages the house of commons to hear his pleas and find humanity.

‘’… Please reconsider your decision to cancel the food voucher scheme over the summer holiday period and guarantee the extension.’’

A representative from the UK’s Department for Education says that;

“As schools open more widely, and their kitchens reopen, we expect schools to make food parcels available for collection or delivery for any children that are eligible for free school meals who are not yet able to return to school,”

The Prime Minister, however, states that the welfare assistance scheme will provide help to those unable to afford food and other essentials due to the impact of Covid-19.
