It’s Time for Americans to Keep Clean and Start Using Reusable Straws!

COVID-19 has taught us all a lot over the past months, but one thing it surely has brought to light… just how important the planet is and why it’s more important now than ever before to help do things to not only help the environment but to be mindful and clean of items we use during our daily lives.

For countless years, people have been using single-use plastic straws to enjoy their beverages. However, those straws have ended up polluting the oceans, and with COVID-19, you now really don’t know how many hands/people have touched those straws before it gets served to you.

Enter in innovator Bert Balas and his product The Straw – a reusable straw that you can carry with you anywhere you wish to go!  With various States here in the United States enacting variations of plastic bans, Bert created America’s top selling reusable straw that even got the sign-off by PETA.

The product allows restaurants and people to stop using wasteful one-off, single-use plastics and keep within new laws, and instead have their own straw with them wherever they go, that only they have touched / cleaned.

We spoke to Bert about this genius idea and how everyone in America should be switching!

Why did you decide to innovate what we all know as a straw and create “The Straw”?

About a year and a half ago, when we first heard the buzz of single-use plastic straws being banned. The proposed transition of going back 60 years to paper straws did not make any sense, it is still single-use! After researching reusable straws available on the market, nothing was portable, versatile, and easy to clean. There was room for improvement! After sketching a few designs and some market research, a new innovative straw started coming to life.

What sets your product apart from others?

The Straw has been carefully constructed to compliment any user with a sleek, smart design. It is compact, portable and versatile, with four different lengths. Best of all, it comes in a watertight case! This allows the user to add a little water or mouthwash to the case before leaving home for a quick rinse on-the-go!

Why is helping to save the planet so important to you?

I absolutely love the outdoors! My respect and appreciation for nature is probably one of my biggest sources of inspiration to do what I’m doing with The Straw. There is also a sense of duty that motivates this mission. When you see so much litter in city streets, on beaches and nature trails, you just have to start somewhere. The Straw is just the beginning of my goals to do my part and help promote a sustainable future.

You just partnered with PETA. Why was it an easy choice to get involved with this organization?

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals align with our mission to protect nature and have created a large network of business and individuals. We hope to collaborate with various PETA partners in the future and support missions that are working toward a sustainable future. 

Along with saving the planet and animals, your product also gives customers some peace in mind during COVID-19 times. Care to explain this statement more?

Many people have mentioned the benefit of a personal straw is knowing where it’s been, clean and clear of contamination. Single-use straws and glasses are often touched by someone else where your lips make contact. This can be unsettling for some people, especially during times like this.

What trends in the straw and beverage industry do you see coming in the future?

I am confident the innovation of a personalized, portable, reusable straw will gain even more popularity in the straw industry over the years. As single-use plastic straws are banned around the world with the awareness of its environmental impacts, many restaurants will stop offering straws all together. The drinking straw has been a part of human history for thousands of years, I don’t see it going anywhere any time soon. However, it is likely to evolve into more of a luxury, personal item, rather than the disposable straws we have become accustomed to.

What regions in the US have been purchasing your products the most?

There has been quite a bit of interest across the country with the majority of orders in the North East from New York and New Jersey. There is also a growing interest on the West Coast in California and Arizona that could surpass the North East very soon.

What else do you have planned for 2020?

There may be an announcement in the near future of another partnership that will help us inspire a sustainable future. Beyond that, we aim to continuously improve our product and procedures by design in order to provide people the most value we possibly can.
