In a move to practice anti-racism, Lady- Antebellum changes its name to Lady A

Antebellum, is something that has occurred or happened pre-war, especially during the US civil war, if it goes by the meaning. Many people use it as a reminiscence to the things, values, or places they’ve been attached to.

14 years ago, Lady Antebellum named her band after the southern antebellum-style home where they took their first photos. On Thursday, the group came with an Instagram post to announce that it will be replacing the name antebellum with A and the name would go by Lady A.

The change in the name has come forth after realizing that the word holds its association with the meaning of slavery. In the Instagram post, the band said, “When we set out together almost 14 years ago, we named our band after the southern ‘antebellum’ style home where we took our first photos. As musicians, it reminded us of all the music born in the south that influenced us…southern rock, blues, R&B, gospel and of course country. But we are regretful and embarrassed to say that we did not take into account the associations that weigh down this word referring to the period of history before the civil war, which includes slavery.”

Apparently, the name is the first step which is taken by the group in order to eradicate racism and practice anti-racism across the world. The group also mentioned that their second would be a donation to the equal justice initiative through Ladyaid. While speaking about racism, they said that the world needs to lead examples of humility, love, empathy, and action so that our future generation could be spared from any kind of spoken or unspoken injustice.
