There is a popular YouTube channel series called Dalesha’s Life that shares the day-to-day life, achievements and sometimes struggles of Dalesha and her boyfriend Manny, who are one of the America’s only legally blind interracial couples.

From protesting to cooking food, the series that is updated weekly brings viewers into the lives of the blind couple, and is changing the misconceptions some have about what it means to live life day-to-day being blind.

We spoke to Manny and Dalesha to hear their thoughts on the series taking off and what’s to come next!

Why did you decide to start a show dedicated to educating about blindness and the misconceptions people have?

Over the years, we’ve noticed that more than anything else, many people are somewhat uncomfortable around people who are partially or fully blind. Giving workshops and seminars haven’t been enough to fully eliminate these discomforts that the general public has so we felt that it was time to take a new approach. If people are able to see the everyday life of a legally blind couple, while being entertained, the misconceptions and uncertainties that most have will slowly begin to disappear.

Is it hard to shoot, edit and create a show, especially being blind? What tools do you use?

Well, over the years Dalesha has become rather proficient with using her iPhone to do the shooting and editing. Using a combination of iMovie, Vont, and an app called VoiceOver, Dalesha is able to do all of the video editing. The VoiceOver app reads what is on the screen aloud so that Dalesha can navigate the iMovie and Vont apps when her vision is insufficient.

You are also an interracial couple. How has that played into your topics of conversation given the current state of our society and what has been going on?

That’s a great question. The most complex aspect of this issue is related to us starting a family soon. As adults, we have discussed and understood the implications of race in society today. Having a child and helping him or her to understand is a challenge that we are ready to tackle, even though we are a bit fearful. Being an interracial couple has taught us to open our minds to cultures and viewpoints different from our own. We have made it a focal point of our relationship to discuss and understand the other’s thinking in all issues—big and small.

Why is showcasing everything you do so important to you both?

We want to show every aspect of our life together to help answer the questions that people may not have even known they had. When the main objective is to teach and inform, complete transparency is a key factor that should not be overlooked. We also feel that allowing the world to see as many aspects of our life as possible will make people feel even more comfortable with asking us difficult and typically unasked questions.

What do you see happening with ‘Dalesha’s Life’ in the near future?

We see many great things for our channel in the future. First and foremost, we see the channel growing larger and being able to bring our life to a larger audience. Additionally, we see Dalesha’s Life moving into new territories of content, including the journey of starting a family and raising a child together.

What trends in the online space and with influencers and YouTubers like yourself do you see happening as time goes on?

As time progresses, we believe that influencers and YouTubers will continue to become spokespersons for companies and brands, more so than they do today. In addition, they will be the voices of tomorrow with organizations and charities, using their platforms to reach new audiences that previously were missed. Additionally, we feel that YouTubers will begin making more series’. In the next 5-10 years, the most watched series’ will include shows created by YouTubers.

What else do you have planned for 2020?

We are working on lots of things right now that we can’t mention just yet. The biggest thing that we are working on is deciding when and where we want to start our family. We are in the process of researching and visiting different places that we believe fit our lifestyle and are ideal for raising our first child.

What do you hope people walk away learning after viewing your channel and getting a glimpse into your lives?

We’re so glad you asked! More than anything else, we want viewers to walk away feeling good. We want our viewers to see both legaly blidn and interracial couples as normal. If those who come across our channel are laughing and enjoying themselves, we know that they’ll walk away feeling more comfortable with the idea of having a legally blind person as their neighbor, co-worker, or even their friend.
